Theme: Oh, The Place’s we’ll Go!
Over the next few weeks, the Toddler classes will spend time learning about various types of transportation. We will spend these last two weeks before Spring Break talking and learning about our first two types of transportation: trucks and trains.
The week of February 21-25, we will focus our learning on trucks. During this time, we will read lots of truck books, including Down by the Station , Big Truck and Little Truck, Truck Talk: Rhymes on Wheels, and Red Light, Green Light . Students will have the opportunity to create various color pictures using big and little truck wheels rolled in paint. We will be able to look at the different sizes of the wheels and talk about why they are that way. We will spend time talking about many types of trucks, how they are used in various ways, and why they are important. As you visit the classroom, you will also be able to see car tracks all around the room, which students can use toy cars/trucks to follow to the block center!
The next song we’ll learn, as we begin to talk about cars and trucks, is the stoplight song:
(Tune: Twinke, Twinkle Little Star)
Twinkle, twinkle traffic light
‘Round the corner shining bright.
Red means stop; green means go;
Yellow means go very slow.
Twinkle, twinkle traffic light
Round the corner shining bright.
The following week, we will shift our focus to trains. Here we will read train books, such as Freight Train, Train Song, and Wave Hello to Thomas. During this time, our truck tracks will transform into train tracks! We will talk about the different parts of a train and sing songs about trains and, of course, the caboose!
Throughout these few weeks, we will also be continuing to talk about our overarching idea of sizes. We will compare large and small trucks/trains, while also continuing to practice our size based sorting. At the fine motor center, the students have enjoyed using tweezers to sort various size “wheels” into large and small containers; while at the cognitive center, they work to match cards which contain pictures of various sized trucks. The play dough center will have transportation themed cookie cutters. Following Spring Break, we will pick up our transportation theme with airplanes!
Thank you, again, to our volunteers who helped with the Valentine’s Day Craft Day!
